Just got my AFP results and was told it was positive, indicating higher risk of spina bifida. Then I read from Mayo Clinic that insulin dependant moms can have skewed results. I can’t get in for the level 2 ultrasound for another week and trying to stay calm. Has anyone else gone through this? Prayers are greatly appreciated…
Mayo Clinic is correct. The AFP test automatically says you’re at higher risk for neural tube defects, including spina bifida, simply because you have diabetes. There is no insight into how well you’re controlled. With our 2nd pregnancy, we also got increased risk factor, got totally freaked out, and it turned out to be completely incorrect. Our son is a happy, healthy 4.5 year old now. I hope this is true for you, too.
