My blood sugar shoots up randomly

I have only been diagnosed for a few days but I have realized that sometimes my blood sugar levels go up without any reason. For example last night 2 hours after supper I was at 8.6... 2 hours later I was at 14. Today I was at 6.0 before lunch and at 6.6, 2 hours after lunch, and right now I am at 13. I did not eat or drink anything other than water those both times.... Does anyone have any theories?

Oh, there are plenty of possibilities!  (Hi and welcome, by the way!)  Managing the big D is really more of an art than a science, as things don't always go how you think they will, number-wise.

I have plenty of theories, but first, a few questions:  What did you eat for lunch?  (Was it high in fat?)  Has this happened a few days in a row, or did it only happen today?  Were you feeling more stress than normal this afternoon?

not anymore stress. it was a really well balanced lunch, low in fat. It has happened a few times now. (2-3 times)

i haven't been on MDI for awhile, so i can't remember how long all the insulins work. my theory would be that your long-acting insulin is running out or becoming less effective in the afternoon, so your blood sugars are jumping up. it might need to be upped slightly.

That would be my guess as well.  Do you take one shot of long-acting or two in a day?  If you're only doing one, splitting the dose might help you avoid the "wearing off" period of time.  (Of course, you'll want to consult your doctor before doing it.)

I take 1 dose of long acting before going to bed... so that was 18 hours ago... that would explain it. Actually thats most likely it, its amazing how simple and logical that sounds but right. (I guess experience has its perks and this forum really works). I will definitely check with my specialist on Friday when I see her.

Thank you so much

Sometimes I have that happen and realize I didn't count enough carbs or do quite enough insulin, could that be it?

When I was first dx'ed my bs was all over the place. Kim is right about it being an art. First you have learn your body, well I did. 2 hrs. after a meal has been a high (pun intended lol) point in my bs. For me I get the number down by injecting about 30-45 mins. before I eat. Try not to stress too much about the bouncing bs (bull#hit LOL). your a1c will tell how you are doing. My first a1c was 13.3 my last a1c was 5.7 and I have been diabetic less than 2 years. Oh, one quick example when I was first dx'ed my bs went from 352 (19.5) to 52 (1.38) in 2 hrs. Don't know if you know!!  mmol/l  times 18 = mg/dl

I really don't think so because I ate and was stable for 4 hours after my meal at a good level. then around this time most nights (well the four nights since I've been diagnosed), my blood sugar jumps 4-5 points.

C and Kim are probability right!!! I take my Lantus in the morning. Just go kind of slow as I think your body is still adjusting ( as always IMHO), a whole 4 days lol  May I ask what your a1c was????

I'll find out what my a1c was on Friday. On Monday the results weren't in yet. I'll keep you all posted. Thanks
