I’ve been living pretty well with T1 for 42 years. But last year CVS Caremark stopped covering Lantus, and I’m down to my last bottle. CVS is going to require me to switch to Basaglar. I was hoping someone has had success in getting CVS to make an exception to allow people to stay on Lantus? If so, would love to hear how you did that.
Otherwise, if you’ve switched to Basaglar, would love to get some feedback on how the transition went, including dosage changes, etc.
Hi!
I went through exactly the same thing a few months ago. Fought really hard to stay on Lantus, but to no avail. Eventually I gave up and switched to Basaglar.
So far it seems to be working about the same as Lantus. The biggest adjustment for me was that it doesn’t come in vials (I’m and MDI user so I’ve always bought vials of insulin) so I had to learn how to work with an insulin pen. But I adjusted pretty quickly and it seems to be controlling my BG pretty well. There were a few days when my levels were super high and I had to do more insulin to account for it, but after about a week everything was back to normal.
Best of luck! If you can convince CVS to let you stay on Lantus, please let me know; I’d love to hear how you managed it.
Hi, I used Lantus for years and just recently switched to Basalgar. I’ve been using it a few months and have had no problems with it. I actually prefer the Basalgar flexpen, it operates very smoothly.
I also use cvs and according to my doctor, Basalgar is exactly the same as Lantus just manufactured by a different company and shouldn’t change anything with my diabetes

I went through the same thing…CVS Caremark and Lantus not being covered. My plan was to switch to Basalgar, but my endocrinologist actually encouraged me to try Tresiba instead. It’s another long-acting insulin that actually lasts longer than 24 hours. You still take daily injections…it has smoothed out some dips and bumps I was experiencing with Lantus. Maybe something to consider.
