I know they say check if you are over 300 but can you get them if lets say you are running 250-290 for a good 2 weeks?
Riley is going through another hormonal cycle I guess cause she is showing signs of insulin resistance again this month. Not sure if I should have her check her levels more often or still only if she is over 300.
She is feeling fine other than well her attitude. Which is a mix of hormones and high numbers.
She did test yesterday she was right at 300. She said it was at trace. Then the rest of the day she staid just below 300. Over night with 25 units of her levermir she didnt drop at all grr. So she staid around 280 all night.
Yeah I will have her check them on and off through the day 300 or not.
GRR 398! She has trace to small ketones. I gave her 6 units for 64 carbs and she had 3 units for a correction about half hour before she ate. We have about 45 minutes until her 2 hour make and another correction. I know I need to test her every two hours and give her corrections every two as needed. Normally by dinner time she is at a ok number under 200 anyhow.
Make sure you are in touch with your clinic. You may need to be giving her 50-100% more insulin at corrections if she has ketones. (e.g. instead of 3 units correction giving 4.5 or 6 units)
And remember levemir is not meant to drop your numbers overnight - it is meant to keep them level - so if she is waking up same as went to bed then levemir is doing its job. I'd also be adding middle of the night checks if she is having these bad numbers.
The other thing to consider is could she be sick with anything? My son has a possible staph infection in his finger and his numbers were terrible even before the finger started looking bad. Good luck - I know it is frustrating.
how old is Riley? cuz if she's older, her period might be screwing her up. that's what happens to me...I always have to at least double my insulin to be below 400.
She is 9 but puberty has started no period yet but she should have one with in the year. She has been getting like this once a month for about 4 months now.
She has always dropped over night on the levemir. We started her at 25 units and had to lower it because of to many lows now we are up to 25 again with these hormonal periods. I was told it should not drop her BG by more than I believe it was 40 a night. Still I had her give herself 1 or 2 units of her log before bed too and it didnt change her numbers at all. We dont have a clinic so its up to me to figure it all out. I do change her ratio when she gets like this from 12:1 to 10:1 for carbs and change her correction from 50 to 40:1 for anything over 150. It seems to help morning are the worse tho and by evening she gets into a good range.
Yeah when she is high first thing she does is drink more water. Well I guess second thing she does first is insulin. She finally came down so we must be over the hump for this month. I tested her at 3:30 a.m. she was at 99 then at 4:30 a.m. and she was 103. Her 7 day average was at 255 before I tested her this morning. Her 30 day I believe was at 203. The last week just really brought that up.
Any high up in the 200+ can have ketones. There is not a whole lot you can do about it. I was told to drink a lot of water at that time, but I do not know if that is folklore or not. I recommend changing the site where you are giving the shots. Absorption, not resistence, may be your issue. If that does not work, you can try another insulin (check with your doctor). What insulin is she using now?
The presence of ketones can actually be detected by smelling the breath. A fruity breath is a sign of ketones. Drinking lots of water, doubling insulin dose and prohibiting exercise for the time being will help eliminate ketones.

When the cells of the body produce ketones, the ketones are present in the blood first and then the kidneys start working on removing them from the blood - so they show up in the urine. I think most of your other organs that produce fluids will end up with ketones in them too so your saliva has it and that's why you can taste them/smell them.

Riley changes her location with each injection left arm then right. Then she switches to her belly left then right side and repeats. She only gets like this for about a week once a month, Its highly common for kids going through puberty to show signs of insulin resistance. Once they are done with puberty most dont show signs of it anymore but many women do once a month. If it isnt during this one week period her numbers are fine and you can tell by them she goes down with her insulin and it works fine.
