i wanted to know if anyone has ever been turned away when they tried to give blood with the red cross because of there diabetes? i giving blood today so it just sparked that question, so has anyone?
I've given blood before. The question comes up but they just ask me if I have been keeping it under control. When I say yes, they move on. You'll be fine. The only problem is the people drawing usually have less sympathy for you if you are a bit antsy about the needle haha
in canada you're not allowed to give blood if you take insulin to control your diabetes(so no Type 1 can, but SOME type 2's can).
i was pretty pissed off when i found that out after making plans to go give blood finally(I usually tell myself 6months after i get a tattoo or piercing i will donate..then forget and get pierced or something again..but i stuck to my word and then found out i couldnt!)
i donate platelets every 2 weeks and have been giving blood since before I was Dx'd but no, no one ever questions the diabetes. There is only one thing that will get you disqualified for blood donation (that is Diabetes related) and that is if you have used Bovine Insulin.
Yess. i have. They would not let me donate blood... it broke one of my dreams... ive always wanted to give blood and then i was told i cant since im a diabetic.
Pat -- I know, I used bovine insulin in 1981 or 82 before switching to pork, and now I'm considered a mad cow risk! (Mad, maybe, but unrelated to cows!)
Lol. One of these days I will actually get around to asking about the entire blood thing. I think when I see my doctor in a month I can get a real answer from her.
Pat, is your line, reduced and solved for i, the following line:
i > 3u?
As in, is this a mathematical equation for I love you?
Just curious...
i've had multiple bouts of anemia, so i've only donated twice... no problems with being a diabetic, though
I can't give blood because the syringes used (at least by the red cross) have latex in them, and I'm allergic.
haha yeah except you forgot to reverse the > when you divided by a negative.
so yeah turns into " i < 3 u "
thought it was clever/cute

I can't give blood I pass out haha or at least I'm crippled to throwing up and nausea. :P
I was told if you take external insulin (i.e. what we do) you aren't allowed to give blood because it is considered "hormone therapy."
^^that could be very bad information, but that's what i was told.

Hmmm I am embarrassed to admit that I use diabetes as an excuse not to donate. Watching blood come out of me in more than 1-microliter quantities (for testing my bg) kind of puts me in a panic attack. I even got in trouble today at the endo because I haven't had bloodwork in almost 2 years. Been avoiding it on purpose.
ooo. this is all wicked interesting to me.
when I was diagnosed, mind you, I was TEN, my first question was... "Can I still donate blood when I get older?"
I wish I were kidding. I'm kind of strange. But my blood type is O+, so...
Anyway. Being 16, I can donate now and I was thinking of signing up for the blood drive at my school. We have like... two a year... I think...
I guess all I have to worry about is my family's tendency to by anemic.

well if you are anemic, they will not let you do it, so you shouldn't worry. they used to do a thing where your blood floated down (maybe they still do in some places?) but now they do the finger stick and put the blood sample in a little machine. It measures your hemocrit (iron % or level..) but you need to have at least a 12.5 or you won't be eligible to donate. It's a little more scientifically accurate than the "let's see if your bloat floats or sinks" test.
Good luck though, i hope you are able to give! :)
/ Also O+
I don't even like to give it when they have TO TAKE IT! LOL, PLUS IM ONLY 13 SO IDK... GOOD QUESTION THOUGH... I WONDER IF SOMEONE COULD BE AN ORGAN DONER!?!?!
okay so before i posting i should have mentioned that i have given blood liked 5 times before. hahah and i love doing it. i have the same problem about the whole blood leaving my body thing too though so i know how you feel. i was just asking because i have many diabetic friends and when a few have tried to give blood they were turned away just for saying they were diabetic. plus i was just worried cause it was my first time giving with the school and suchh.

[/quote]Sarah,
I had used a bovine insulin but the Red Cross had it on their list of exempted items because there was sufficient documentation from Lilly proving that there was no harvesting from any Cows outside the U.S. If you are seriously interested you may want to do more research... (or not, LOL)
Cheers!

Woo A-D is back!!
But have you given blood, being that you are on the "approved" sanction of Insulin? I can only guess by your answer that you have. But you weren't 100% clear and I don't want to take a guess on speculation.
