Identification?

being new here, but not to the betes. i'm stuck with needing some form of identification. years and years i've been stuck with cumbersome bracelets, and tricky necklace's. until this past year i never imagined of trying to make something more comfortable to identify myself without singleing myself out. as there is now alot of talk about "med-too's" and wheither or not paramedics are able to notice them as well as bracelets, and if a child should have one. im sure there is going to be great opposition on both sides of these new identifications, but as a type1 i'm looking to maybe get one. im not sure of where and how large, and to what artistic extent. i'd like to know what you're thoughts are on this. maybe share some stories, and such.

Do you have a link for it? I haven't heard of them. When we were in the hospital they gave us this link http://www.coolmedid.com/. The bracletts look more like the livestrong one. I was going to get my daughter a bunch, so she could wear them during sports or to match different outfitts and the such.

I'd be interested in looking at this though.

Thanks!!

i haven't found any well organized links, groups, or even people. most of what i find is newstoday, abc, cnn, talking about tattoo's as a i.d. the "live strong" bands are news to me, but an icredible idea. i'd like to look into that. thank you for the link.

Hello,

I went with the tattoo. I am a mech. and can't have loose jewerly. A paramedic told this is a good place(inside right forearm), it's where they would look for an IV.  y.

i had thought about going with an angel wraped by two snakes, with d.o.d and diabetic. http://www.diabetesadvocacy.com/tattoos.htm the only organized site i found for the tattoo i.d. i hope this helps.

I contacted a local hospital and they refused to comment on tattoos and identification of conditions...but if you want the tattoo go for it.  My only recommendation would be to research your symbols before getting inked, there is debate over the whole snakes/wings issue...for example the AMA symbol is a single snake with no wings http://www.ama-assn.org/

Here are some other juvenators thinking about d-alert tattoos

Do what you want, but I ain't getting Diabetes tattooed on me anywhere.  I wear a necklace and didn't like it at first, but now I don't even think about it.  I only take it for one thing and since I've been married for a long time I don't take it off very often ever these days!

But sereiously.  Think long and hard about this.  I don't know about you, but I don't want people to know I have diabetes unless I tell them.  If you got a tattoo that would have to be on your wrist where a bracelet would be for a EMT to find it, everyone you meet and see will probably see it too.  You could be discriminated against because of that.

I'd also ask the EMTs in your area if they would look for a tattoo and if they'd believe it if they saw it.  Perhaps they could tell you what it should look like so it would be noticed and believed.

i'm fine with people who are curious about diabetes, im often asked and give the short one liners. until there are those actualy extremely curious i give a full explanation, i've also be discriminated for most of my life so it's nothing new. since i know many of the emt's and police in my suburbia, it shouldn't cuase to much of a ruckus. as for the actual symbol that i might use, a simple cadecues.

haha i completely agree with you. i wouldnt get diabetic tattooed anywhere. my diabetes info is in my cell phone under "in case of emergency". i dont go around and advocate being a diabetic. that would defeat the purpose of trying to live a normal life.

If the EMT's saw the tattos that i have...i dont think they would treat me period. They would probably leave me there in the street if something happened.

i made a rough sketch, and pasted diabetec.
