While the exact cause of diabetes are unknown, researchers believe genetics play a role. So, with that in mind, I am curious how many people in your immediate family, siblings, parents, grandparents, children, have diabetes?
We ran an interesting article on Diabetes News Hound today talking about genetics in Type 1 diabetes (the article also contains some info on genetics in Type 2). You can read it here: How Likely Are You to Pass on Diabetes to Your Kids?

Researchers Turn to Fruit Flies to Unravel Diabetes Mysteries
I am the only person in my family who has diabetes, but many people in my family have other autoimmune diseases (especially Hyperthyroidism)
My, my father, my grandmother, my aunt, my cousin.
my mom's dad had T2(diagnosed when he was in his 60's) and I've got T1.
Growing up I was the only one out of a very large family. there have been no diabetics that anyone can remember. Unfortunately my 5 year old daughter was diagnosed going on 2 years ago. I just hope my other daughter, who is 1, does not end up with it.
I probably should have noted that I am a Type 1.5 diabetic (I consider myself basically Type 1) and both my parents were diagnosed with Type 2 in their 50s and 60s, despite being at healthy weights. Same thing with my paternal grandmother who went into the hospital for hip surgey and came out with type 2 diabetes, despite being extremely thin.
My son is the one and only with T1, but I have (or had) 2 grandparents, 2 great aunts, a great uncle, several distant cousins and a mother-in-law with T2. My mother-in-law's parents and brother also have T2. (These are just the ones I know about.) Like DNH"s grandmother, my mother-in-law developed T2 after surgery, but it was open heart. Now that she has had a heart transplant she is on insulin.
I wasn the only one in my family until a number of years back when my cousin was diagnosed.
I know a number of people were discussing this very thing at: http://juvenation.org/forums/p/545/3688.aspx#3688, also...
Cheers!

My father is T1, I am T1 then on my father's side of the family two of my first cousins each have one child who are T1 (Those 2 cousins are not siblings). Prior to my father there was no family history of T1.
I am the only one in my entire family, extended and immediate, with any time of diabetes ever.
My paternal Grandfather had Type 1 Diabetes. He died the week I was diagnosed.
I'm the only one in my family, but T1 is pretty common in my stepmom's family. Her dad, brother and some cousins have it.
I'm T1. My nearest relative with T1 is a second cousin, once removed.
solemente ME!!!!!! i am the only person diabetic T1 or other
The only other T1 in my family, besides myself, was my mom's dad. He died when my mom was 12 from diabetic complications - kidney, I think. This would have been in the 1960's, and I think insulin wasn't used yet, or maybe it was just too little too late in terms of damage, by the time he got on it. (Anyone know when insulin was first widely used to treat T1? Can't find a definitive answer when I Google it.) As for T2, my uncle was diagnosed about 10 years ago.
Myself, two brothers, and one of the brother's son: 4 total
I'm the one and only.
my dad was diagnosed T1 when he was 12; my son recently diagnosed at 5

First of all, my presence here today was made possible by my daily use of insulin since 1942. Insulin was first used in 1922, and all T1s after that either used insulin or they died. Before 1922, all T1s died (or starved until 1922), usually within a couple of weeks of the onset. Some of you were probably dx by tests before you got into DKA, but in the old days they didn't have those tests, and the symptoms of DKA were what led to the dx. I can't explain why insulin wasn't used in your grandfather's case. Maybe there are more facts about his case that you could dig up.

[/quote]You're right; looks like I need to get some better information on what happened. Thanks.
