I was diagnosed when I was 6 too :)
look forward to helping you and your son adjust! welcome :)
my daughter was diagnosed when she was 2. Its a very overwhelming journey you have been thrown into! My little girl is now almost 5~ yikes! We still have lots of questions all the time, we just take things minute by minute and that helps us get through... if you need anything just ask., there are some great resources out there and this is a good one. Unfortunately it'll become second nature to you and your son. As a parent it isn't easy on so many levels, its nice to come here and know you aren't alone :)
Batts, how old are you now? What did you feel when you first got diagnosed?
Sorry, these are some what of personal questions.
Thank you everyone for replying back.
Right now son is under the weather and battling a flu. Blood sugar way up high around 290.
I'm glad you joined -- I love it here! I was 4 when I was diagnosed, so I don't remember much. But, according to my Mom, the first year she learned more and more but was basically just trying to do her best and was totally overwhelmed. But, after a year, she felt more comfortable. Not that it isn't hard, but things become second nature and easier when everything isn't new and unfamiliar.
I hope people on here who live successful adult lives are good examples that children diagnosed with T1 can still lead rewarding lives! I mean, having D is hard, but I've been able to get a masters degree, have a good career, get married, have a son, travel around the world, etc. (Not in that order! Traveling has become less fun w/ a one year old, lol.) I get depressed sometimes, but I also feel very lucky to be alive.
I hope your son feels better soon! Don't be afraid to call the endo with questions! Sick days are tough until you get the hang of them... Obviously, this site is great to ask questions, too.
