My daughter is 4 and was diagnosed 6 months ago. This is my first attempt at reaching out for any kind of help or advice. I feel like I've been drifting through this year with no direction or help. Any words of wisdom would be greatly apprectiated.
Velvetmoon,
I hear ya! People can get real skittish and either are afraid to help or just simply do not know what to say or do. I was and am in the same boat. I read a few books to get a feel of how others manage this. I also bought a couple of kids meals books for T1 to mix it up and keep variety in his diet. Find a support group in your area really helps. I love mine cuz we drink wine and laugh and trade good ideas. I needed that for myself. To actually see the faces of other parents made me feel less alone. Also they are not out for a pity party which I thought was cool. It's been 6 months for you and you will always find new info in all aspects as time moves forward. It's been almost 6 years for us and we are still learning!
Hope this helps a little,
Movy
Hi, Velvetmoon,
Our son was diagnosed just over 2 months ago. Being accustomed to being the 'strong one', it's been a little odd for me to reach out for support and assistance with this. But, it has been exactly what our family has needed. Juvenation has proven an invaluable source of information and support; please don't EVER hesitate to post to the general community with concerns or questions. I've just, today, located a local support group in our area, and encourage you to do the same, not just for your child, but for you as well. We, as caretakers, have to take care of ourselves before we can effectively take care of our children.
Keep posting, and keep in touch! You don't have to do this by yourself.
Blessings,
Mo
My daughter was diagnosed 4 yrs ago when she was 3. That first year is sooooo hard! Taking in all the new info, dealing with all the emotions, learning how to deal with it all...it is ALOT! I read a book that helped a great deal in understanding everything. Think Like a Pancreas, it is written by a man that has type 1 diabetes and a certified diabetic educator. Get your highlighter out and get ready to learn, I am actually getting ready to read it again to refresh myself on all the book has to offer.
Take one day at a time...it does get easier. I still wake up sometimes and can't believe MY daughter has diabetes. But, she is a happy, healthy little girl! You and your daughter will be fine and hopefully will meet some amazing people that are going through what you are going through. Reach out to you local JDRF chapter and support groups. You will have your ups and downs but, you get through them together.
Hope this book helps! It did me! Parents of children with type 1 diabetes become your family and the children are your heroes!
Stacy
Amen to that Monique! Velvetmom, we are all in this together.....stay well and strong. Keep coming back!
