Feeling bad about not knowing my dx date

why would someone get something tattooed? because they want to and it means something to them(well you would hope). just cuz you don't want to and it doesn't hold any meaning for you, doesnt mean other people are the same.

now if we were talking about getting a medic alert tattooed on the body to replace a medic bracelet or necklace..that i would agree is a stupid idea.

Hi Doug, I hope you find the date.

With a record like yours ,Proud is the word. Keep going !!!

all i was asking was a simple question. i know every person is different, i never said it was a stupid idea. i only remember mine because my grandfather died a year after i was diagnosed. if i couldn't remember my diagnose date, i'd probably get it tattooed. isn't it an unsafe idea though? diatbetics don't always heal properly when they get tattooed. i understand the meanings of a tattoo. i want one too, my fiancee sketched it out for me, so i honestly understand the meanings of it.

but to me, the day i was diagnosed, is basically the day that my life took a turn in a different direction. for both and good. I lost quite a lot of friends because of my diabetes. but i also became a lot closer to my family.

I know, I was just saying it might be important for some people. No personal attack meant :)

Tattoos? I've got three..going in tomorrow morning for my 4th..which is actually a cover-up of the tattoo on the top of my right foot. Mine have always healed either before or dead on with the length of time the artist estimated..which, even them being aware I have diabetes, was no different than they have told my friends.

Same with my piercings. I have 11 holes in my body that have industrial steel through them. all have healed fine, only a few took a bit longer because of where they are/the abuse they took during the months they heal, and usually i stop cleaning them before they are full healed and switch to the shower only.

I have ZERO desire to tattoo my diagnosis date (or anything else for  that matter) on my body somewhere.  First off I'm not even sure what it is.  Sure it changed my life, but so have several other dates that I have no desire to tattoo either.  But, to each his/her own!

I just figured out that I was diagnosed on April 5, 1996... All I knew before was that it was Easter Weekend..I asked my mom last night the exact day and she said she didn't know...only that it was the Friday before Easter when I was three...so I back tracked easters since then and I found out that in 1996 (whn I was 3) Easter was Sunday the 7th..therefore Friday was the 5th! I think its so awesome to know! it only took me what....13 years? lol

I have 10 piercings and 2 tattoos. I've never had a healing problem either. I'm pretty certain you only have healing issues when your diabetes is uncontrolled. When it's controlled, your body (pretty much) acts like every other person's. Personally, I wouldn't choose to get my date tattooed either, but everyone feels differently about the day they were diagnosed.

I know several people that do not know there diagnosis date, nor do they remember much about it.

I was diagnosed back in 1989 (at the age of 7) and I remember many details about that Tuesday.  I do remember alot of it on my own, but some I remember from when my parents talk to  parents of newly diagnosed children. We share our story often.  My family made sure I "enjoyed" my time in the hospital.  My dad and I, to this day, have many jokes and do crazy stuff, so I have several stories of things that we did while I spent a week in the hospital.

It's interesting that you say you never defined yourself as a diabetic.  This is a word that never really became part of my language.  My first endo said that I am not a "diabetic" - I am a person with diabetes.  It should not be a label.   But you are right, when someone asks me to describe myself, diabetes is not usually one of those descriptors.
