Is there a particular way we should be disposing of expired vials of insulin? I'm not entirely comfortable just tossing it in the trash can. Should the insulin be dumped down the drain (we're on a septic system) before putting the vial in the trash?

You have a biohazard bin? Hmmm.... I just toss all my stuff in the garbage can. Haha maybe I'm doing something wrong.
I do the same, just toss the vials out with the rest of the trash.

I use an empty detergent bottle as a sharps container, so i just put the glass insulin bottle in there

Do you guys not get them for free at the pharmacy?? They give me mine free at the pharmacy and I just have to take them in when they are full and they dispose of them for me.

The sharps i store up in a 5gallon water jug. No idea what i'm going to do with it once it's full though. I've asked around at the local dumps and none of them will take it. Anyone have any good suggestions?
I guess I've just never really worried about it. All of my "sharps" come with lids or caps so there's nothing protruding in the garbage.
I put mine in the trash. I don't think it could be harmful to anyone-- first they'd have to get it out of the trash, and then they'd have to get a syringe to get the insulin out of the vial...
I've never had a problem disposing of my syringes in their respective containers. Since they are marked Biohazard and are sealed they always accept them. If you store them in jugs, glasses, etc you should be okay with disposing of them as long as they are clearly marked. Then again I guess it is dependant on your location and your local trash facility administrator. I've never considered throwing out the vials separately since they are empty but I guess I could be violating some kind of law with that line of thinking.

I just use packaging tape to seal the lid and then put it in an opaque bag aka trashbag. no one will ever know
I would call your local hospital or endo's office about the sharps container if the local trash company or dump will not take it. As for my bottles of insulin, they go in the trash as I tend to make sure there is nothing in them... I mean for what I pay for insulin, no drop is ever wasted. The expired stuff, I would probably just toss. First off those bottles are pretty hard to break in the normal travel and life of a trash bag. Secondly, insulin is not dangerous in anyway shape or form. The only way it could cause a threat is if someone managed to get it injected into themselves and not be aware of it...

Our son was diagnosed while we were visiting in Orlando. Among the many piles of information we received was a flyer saying that the fire department would take sharps for disposal in Florida. You might check with your local FD to see if they have a similar program.
A 5-gallon jug might be a little problematic, though. Our nurse neighbor said to use a 1-gallon jug because it fits into their bio-hazard pick-up boxes.

thats what i do i put ever thing in a biohazerd buin then put ever thing in it in a detergent contaner and then tape the lid on very good and throw it away. in the garbeg can no q asked about it.
I just throw mine away or the ones that I don't need or use that aren't out of date go to my uncle or my grandfather. Or we give it to a local nursing home.
