Hi, this is my first time on any type of site like this, so hope I am doing this right.! I have had type 1 diabetes for 21 years now, and have never had a pump. I have been in good control, my hAICs average around 6.5, and have never had a desire to get a pump. My husband and I are trying to get pregnant and of course I have questions/concerns regarding diabetes and pregnancy. But most of the posts I have read are people with pumps. I was wondering if there were any other diabetics that have done pregnancy without a pump, and if so, do you have any tips/suggestions? Thanks! Cindy
I cant imagine pregnancy without a pump! Your insulin needs go up SO much, basal rates change dramatically, even by the hour! I am a few weeks away from delivery and am taking 3 times as much insulin as I did pre-pregnancy. I as well would be very curious to hear some stories form ladies who managed pregnancy with injections.
I also don't plan on going on the pump before/during/after pregnancy unless I have to (I have tired the pump and it did not work for me) so I'm very interested in this topic as well! I don't plan on going through with a pregnancy for a number of years, but it's always good to be preparing early! haha
I am glad to hear from someone else who feels the same way, thank you! I hope that someone else has gone through it and will share their experience. And yes, it is always good to prepare early, lol, especially with all of what we have to deal with as diabetics. I will certainly post my experiences once the time comes (which is hopefully soon!)
Hey Cindy -- send me a private message (I'll send you a friend request so you can) and I can answer your questions about my pregnancy. I had a very successful pregnancy with my son in 07-08 on Lantus and Humalog. Pre pregnancy a1c: 6.1; pregnancy a1c's: 5.8, 5.1, 5.5; son was born healthy at 7 1/2 lbs! It was a lot of work (my understatement for the day) but no unusual complications and allllll worth it!
Lantus hasn't been tested in pregnancy, but informally, my doctors haven't seen any problems with it. My only problem with Lantus during pregnancy was lows in the night b/c I needed so much during the day. But, I'd wake up 2x's a night and drink juice and I survived. (:
I did go on the dexcom CGM (although it's not approved for pregnancy -- it's an extra tool in addition to your meter).
Let me know what else you want to know about my experience...
I don’t have the pump and I’m 25 weeks pregnant with our second child. My doctor and I have just upped my insulin intake cause of the baby other than that just monitor your sugar.
