College?

Looking for an answer from someone in collage or has graduated. I’ll be going to collage in, like, 5 years. How hard is it to manage T1D and collage at the same time?

Honestly for me managing my diabetes while in college is the same if not easier than highschool. College is very important but its more relaxing than a highschool classroom. All of my professors know about my diabetes so they know if I’m in and out of class some days its because of that. You pick your schedule in college so things run on your time.

Stress with school all depends on how you act towards it. Stress can sometimes affect me and push me away from everything, but each person is different. Once you find a good coping with stress activity everything should work well for you. College is just like any school, you have to pay attention to both class and how you fell. But like I said college kinda runs on your time.

I hope this answered your question. I’m happy to talk more about it if your still worried.

@AAT1D, it wasn’t harder - I was too immature and way too easily distracted to do a good job controlling my diabetes in college. so my control was pretty bad. it got better afterwards.

Hi Amanda,

When I was in college I was on MDI and so, experienced quite a few nighttime lows. I made sure my roommate and RA knew about my diabetes and what to do if my BG dropped.

I was on a meal plan the first couple of years and was able to choose what I ate from the cafeteria (I then moved to an on campus apartment where I prepared my own meals). The cafeteria also provided me a night time “snack” ( I had to provide a doctor’s note to them explaining why this was necessary.); which ended up being a brown bag lunch of sandwich, chips and fruit. I just ate what I needed and put the rest in a mini-fridge in my dorm room. Thus, my dorm room was the one everyone came to if they missed a meal in the cafeteria!

So, my suggestion is to be open with those who need to know. If you don’t choose to share your diabetes with everyone, that’s fine. Just make sure that someone knows what to do if you have an issue. And be sure to let the college cafeteria know your dietary needs in advance. You can get the phone number to reach them from the admissions office, or on the website, I’m sure. That way if they require any sort of documentation you can get it to them before school starts. Most colleges will let you know what is provided and will work with you to make sure you have what you need.
