Can Type One Be Prevented?

I was told in the hospital that type 1 can not be prevented. But since then I have heard of one teen who takes pills, not shots and sees the endo, follows a diet ect. Then I heard of Two small children that are prediabetic,so the mom has them on a strick diet trying to prevent diabetes. I thought only type 2 could be prevented. Can type 1 be prevented???

Hi Meme,

Well you can't prevent T1. But T2 can be prevent and sometimes even reversed as long as the individual dosn't start taking insulin. As T2's are more controlled with oral med's and strict diet and exercise and then many no longer have to test or even worry about being T2, as for being pre-diabetic is means the same thing as what we usued to call being "borderline diabetic". Basically it means that a certain individual is predisposed to the diease(maybe alot of people in the person's family have diabetes).

Hopefully this will help to clear things up a little bit for you and help educate others on the differences as well.

Thank you CJ, would you guess the teen on insulin pills is a type 2,and the small children are  type 1 or 2 in the making? I always think of type2 for adults. But hear there are some who are type2 that are young.

type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes is becoming VERY common in children in the US at the moment, as obesity rates rise. 90% of diabetics in the world are Type 2, we only make up 10% of the diabetic population.

I haven't read anywhere that Type 1 can be prevented.... BUT
and this is a BIG BUT (perhaps that came out wrong :)...

Some endocrinologists believe and have proposed that
THE HONEYMOON PHASE CAN BE PROLONGED... PERHAPS INDEFINITELY.

Dr. Richard K.Bernstein (my personal diabetes guru) wrote:

"If the medical treatment is conventional, the honeymoon period eventually
terminates and the well-known roller coaster of blood sugar swings ensues.
Why doesn't the honeymoon period last forever?  My experience with patients
indicates that it can, with proper treatment."

"Based upon the fair number of Type 1 diabetics I've treated from the time
of diagnosis, I'm convinced that the honeymoon period can be prolonged
indefinitely.  The trick is to assist the pancreas and keep it as quiescent
as possible.  With the meticulous use of small doses of injected insulin
and with the essential use of very low carbohydrate diet, the remaining
capacity of the pancreas, I believe, can be preserved."

For me, it's like when people tell you it's not your fault someone left the family. Like, you couldn't have behaved differently, you were enough... that whole spiel - but there's the still "yeah, but I could have done..." or "said..." I often times wonder that if I had known I would someday get diabetes at the time I did, if I made different choices.... walked more, ate better, was more careful I suppose just in general... would it still have happened to me? And, even if it did, would it have happened so soon? So early? Maybe I could have at least held on until 12...

An update is coming to www.preventt1d.org. Many are reporting that polyphenols are a great addition to the fish oil and D3.
