Blood in an Insulin Pen

Question: I’ve been taking Lantus using a pen recently & when I pulled it out, blood got seeped back into the insulin in the pen. Does that mean the whole pen is now useless?

I’d call your doctor’s office on this one. Let us know what they say.

Thank you Jenna. I just got a call back from my doctor and he said, that I could use it for no more than 2 days after the contamination, but to get a replacement asap. So, that is what I did. He said, while the insulin is still usable, it’s potency is compromised, so it would be hard to determine proper dosage with it, causing unnecessary spikes or lows.

@ScrappyDy,

That is good information! Thanks for sending us an update!

That makes sense. Thanks for letting us know and I’m glad you’ve gotten the problem solved.
