Animas and JDRF to team up

Ok. So I got a txt today from Jdrf saying that they are teaming up with Animas to try and make an Atificial Pancreas. They say that this will detect a change in blood sugars and give Insulin automatically like you Pancreas. Here's the website for more info. http://www.artificialpancreasproject.com/

I thought they already had an artificial pancreas on the market, was it a flop?

Hi Brittany,I think this is such exciting news !!!   :)

No, they have one undergoing clinical trials.  Basically, it works... but they just have to make sure it's 100% safe.  I say, let's reap the benefits ASAP.  This partnership between JDRF and Animas is unique because it brings a non-profit and a drug/equipment manufacturer together to expedite through the red tape and get it out there for us to USE!

When I saw the e-mail I was really excited. The web page could use a little help, but I was very excited to see this. Knowing that things are moving is very cool. It is one step closer to a better solution and to an eventual cure!

I doubt we'll have the "magic bullet cure" for another 20 years or so... but in the mean time, I would LOVE an artificial pancreas to be available.  I actually consider it "cure enough for me".  Although the cost may be high initially, the public health implications 20 years down the road (especially with the skyrocketing rates of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes) would be astounding.  Less hospitalizations of diabetics, less deaths, and happier and longer lives.

I think this will help youth with type 1 diabetes especially well.  No more forgetting to bolus, checking your blood sugar 5 hours later, then feeling terrible that you've had 300+ blood sugar since lunch.  C'mon JDRF!  Let's get this approved for public use ASAP!

Do you know if the American Diabetes Assoc. will join in on this ?

I was really excited when I got the txt. That's a  really good question meme.
