Type 1 and MS

I am a type 1 diabetic on the insulin pump , A1C-6.5 for the last 9 months. In 1996 I also found out that I have Multiple Sclerosis and taking copaxone. I have been unable to find a % of how many people are diabetic and also have MS. I have been diabetic since I was 3 years old.  I am unable to work full time due to MS. I live alone and on Medacare. Exercise is tough but am able to walk my dog 3 x a day. All my Dr. don't know the % of people that have both. Any help would be appricated and I would like to chat with any one who has both.

I have an autoimmune disease other than D (Lichen planus). My doctor told me T1's are at a much higher risk for celiac disease and hypothyroidism, and at a somewhat higher risk for all other auto-immune diseases.

That sounds tough to have both! I hope you find someone w/ more experience to talk to!

I too have type -1diabetes and ms.  I was diagnosed with diabetes at 19 and ms at 29.  I too have been searching to find other people with both issues.  My drs have not been willing/able to provide me with connection with both diseases. How are you dealing with it?  I am new to this web forum and would like to chat with you?  How do you do that on this forum?

Hi, all.  I also joined this morning looking for people with experience with T1D and MS.  The JDRF office suggested that I start an MS string in the dual diagnosis room, but I can see there are a couple of people here already.

Hello, Everyone!  I was glad to read these posts about T1 and other autoimmune diseases.  I was told one week ago that I may have MS (I've had T1 for 48 years).  I am scheduled for a brain MRI on Oct 20.  I researched MS and the information was vague about symptoms.  I have loss of balance, occasional tremors, muscle weakness, and fatigue.  I'm not convinced this is MS, but need to see what the MRI shows.  I also have an appt scheduled with a neurologist on Nov. 8.  I am a little worried about the possibility of having MS, not sure what to expect and what my future holds.  I would greatly appreciate any information or support that any of you could provide.        Thanks!    AnitaB.

Bill - Seems I'm late to the party but I was diagnosed with MS in May  - they also suspect Hashimoto's (have hypothyroid, nothing like lack of energy on top of MS exhaustion to make mattress separation a challenge in the morning, lol)... Any side effects with the copaxone?  what improvements have you seen?

Anita - I think it's going to be a bit different for all o of us so I'd be very shy about predicting what it'll be like - as for support - as much as I can be here, I am and I promise you, I am rooting for ya' and willing to share anything I am able (information, insight and prayers) - how'd your MRI turn out?  any more leads on a diagnosis yet?

TK - you found in minutes what took me months, lol - great to have you with us!

Ajar - you can add as a friend and/or just start a conversation - I suspect many of us are using online chat in one form or another (I'm on google chat quite a lot)

Good luck to us all, eh?

Cheers!
