I was just wondering what everyone thought of Symlin and if anyone has/is currently using it in addition to the insulin pump. I have been doing a little research and was thinking about asking my endo about starting it... any input would be helpful!
Shannon,
I am planning on asking my endo about it on Monday (my next appointment). Hypo unawareness is supposed to be a contraindication for prescribing it from what I've read but I'm hoping I can convince her to put me on both the Symlin and a CGM. I am hoping to ebb the tide of weight gain... Other than having to do shots again, I don't see any down side and the research I was able to find looked promising. As I understand it, our beta cells (when we had them) produced something very much like this with our insulin... Let me know what you find and I'll post more after my appointment on Monday...
Cheers!

I am also planning on talking to my endo about symlin. I already asked her about it but now I have a few friends who have used it with great success and plan on really pushing her to let me try it. I see it this way: the worst thing that happens is that it doesn't work for me. It isn't going to hurt me in any so I might as well try it.
Shannon,
Just a quick follow-up… I asked my doctor about Symlin and was told, “absolutely not.” She said that with the hypoglycemia unawareness it seems too risky to her, and for too little gain. I am not sure I agree 100% but I am certainly willing to go one step at a time.
I may try again if/when I’ve gotten on the CGM for a while if I’m still struggling to get back to where I want to be with weight, etc..
Who knows maybe the CGM will help me quit eating to keep the flat-line ;)
Cheers!
