Does it bother anyone else when someone is eating something that has a lot of carbs or sugar in it and someone says that it has so much sugar that they are going to go in to a diabetic coma from eating it?
nope. i actually make that joke alllllll the time when i eat sugary stuff.
I joke about it too sometimes but I think it bothers me mostly because the people that joke about it just have no clue what it is like to live with diabeties. I'm not sensitive about my diabeties but this is just one joke I don't always appreciate.
meh, as long as they aren't saying other stuff and directing it towards me, i just ignore it if i dont know them. if i do, we laugh about it. there's times to get upset and confront someone, but those times just aren't worth it.

I admit to saying this before. Hi aeccork. Welcome!!! Just so you know the reason I USE to say diabetic coma, is I almost went into one or so they say. I am a freak of nature (LOL) as I have been diabetic for about a little over a year and a half (Aug./08), but the part that's weird is I was 52 at the time. So as a fairly new member of Club 1 again I say Welcome to juvenation
Well thanks for the welcom and good gracious. Thankfully in the eleven almost twelve years i have had T1, I have not come close to coma *knocks on wood*. You said you were 52? Thats unbelievable, I have been as low as 15 and still be almost perfectly alert
I admit it annoys me too. Obviously ,I shouldn't care and should worry about more important things. But it rubs me the wrong way.

When I said 52 that was my age, yep dx'ed at 52 years old, told you freak of nature. LOL When they told me I was in ICU, DKA with bs 0f 672 and a1c of 13.2. Have gotten better my last a1c was 5.7 on MDI and I use Lantus and Novolog, Oh and my meter is a Accu-Chek Aviva.
Ha ok got you. I thought you were saying your bloodsugar was 52 and i was like wow thats odd. But i dont think being diagnosed at 52 makes you a freak of nature, it just means whatever caused yours didnt trigger it until then. My doctor used me as a guine (spelling?) pig for all kinds of testing and he came to the conclusion that what caused mine was a stomach ulcer I had when i was 2 to 4 years old. And when i was diagnosed my bloodsugar was well over 700, but i was very fortunate to not go into dka. I HATED lantus when i was taking it and i never used novolog, but my mom is trying to get me switched to it. I have an insulin pump, which is God's gift to t1 diabetics in my opinion and i use humolog.
Thank goodness I am not the only one, though i do agree there are more important things.
I can admit to saying that at one point in time but rite now after almost being in a diabetic coma a few weeks ago im not a fan of people saying it.

I couldn't agree more!
It bothers me as much as a rhinoscerous on stilts would if he were chasing after a leprechaun while making birds noises.
I've accepted the fact that people are stupid and I will always be smarter than them when it comes to my diabetes.
I'm kidding...sort of. When people make comments like that it's best just to ignore them or joke back. Depends what kind of mood you're in when said bozo decides to open their mouths :)
at a *certain time of the month* stuff like that would bother me. Not enough to say something to the offender, but probably enough to complain about it to my sister.
Most of the time, I appreciate a nicely crafted diabeeeeeetus joke.
Liberty Medical Delivers your diabetes supplies right to your door.
OMG, ROFL! That is is the cat form of that guy (Wilferd Brimley?)
THAT'S THE ONE I WAS LOOKING FOR!!!
I couldn't find it quickly enough, so I settled for the other one.

Google Image Search is your friend. I searched for "diabeetus cat" and boom! But it's ok, I'm a nerd, I'm supposed to know these things!
I had to stop myself from playing 'diet police" the other day. I was standing in line at the grocery store (buying healthy of course !!) and the guy behind me was saying to his pal about the discount price on Easter candy but as a diabetic he supposed it wouldn't be good for him to get any EXCEPT he had a 4- pack of Mars bars and a huge bag of chips on the counter to pay for!!! Huh??
