Pizza

pizza affects me like crazy, but I love it. if I do a high and long enough combo bolus, I dont' spike as much...maybe 180 rather than 400+ if there was no combo bolus

Pizza doesn't seem to affect my blood sugar if I only eat a slice, or maybe two small slices. I just bolus a little extra and everything is fine.

However, if I eat 3 or 4 slices (I almost always do), I have problems. I've been trying to figure it out lately, trying something like 50% of the bolus when I eat, 30% an hour later and 20% an hour after that. That seemed to work, but with my luck, it won't next time!

So, I guess my question is, how many of you get the actual carb counts from the store you're getting your pizza from?  Or, are you estimating?

Blessings,

Mo

I use my CalorieKing book and look it up based on the store I'm getting it from. However my mom makes it homemade, with a lot less fat and sugar, and whole wheat flour, and I count that for 36g in 6 ounces, weighed on a kitchen scale. That's about 1 piece of pizza.

There are tons of pizza places by me and depending on where I get pizza from it really effects my BG differently.

A lot of places actually add a good amount of sugar to their tomato sauce.

I eat out a lot less now because I find that I am always combatting the things that they sneak in at resturant kitchens.  Unfortunately, that's what makes a lot of the stuff taste so good. :/

All this talk about pizza makes me really really want some... mmmmmmmmmmmm....

for all the people who dont get high sugar after eating pizza then maybe you are not diabetic :) it is what it is.

I'm fine after pizza as long as I take TONS of insulin. Not diabetic? Yea! I guess I'll be signing off now.....

Pizza doesn't really affect me either... but i guess it all depends on the person and how much they eat :)

Agreed on the thin crust... I've also found that white pizza is a lot easier on me than red sauce pizza.

Pizza has always been a huge problem for me.  However, I have noticed other things that have been problems as well.  Cereal was big for me but I have finally figured out a way to eat it and bolus that works for me.  Coffee was another one.  I even asked the doctor about it.  I use powder creamer and sweet -n- low.  So it shouldn't affect it but I see a rise every time I drink it and they don't change when I don't.  Oh well, I just adapt.  I'm not going to let this completely run my life.  If I want pizza, then I'm going to eat it and love every bite!

Pizza is not really a problem for me, but I have other foods that murder my blood sugars.  Usually things with refined flour are horrible if they also have a moderate amount of sugar, too.

The best pizza-like thing I had was when I was in Boston about a year and a half ago...there was this place that made the best Buffalo Chicken Calzone...they take an 18" pizza and fold it in half over chicken, buffalo sauce, bleu cheese, mozzarella...so good. Reading all these replies made me happy that I'm going to be in Boston this coming week :)

I agree with you.  I never knew how certain foods affected me until the CGM.  Although my A1C's have been under 6 for 9 years.  It's just recently that I've tried to limit my carbs to about 40-50 carbs a day.  This was a big adjustment for me because previously I would eat easily double that.  I never thought pizza had that much affect on me (I would just give myself a square bolus) but it does.  With the stricter diet I can keep my blood sugars much more even (between 80-130) on most days.  Although my A1C is not much different, it's amazing how much better I feel.

Boston is a pretty awesome city :)  What's the name of the place?  Sweet Tomatoes has great pizza, but I don't know if they have exactly in Boston.  Hopefully it won't be raining when you visit.

i asked my friend and he said it was like Tony's Roast Beef or something. Not the name of a place you'd think would have good pizza but it did.

Boston is the Best City .. no question ... great place to live

and how about the C's last night huh? can you say TITLE again ... yup ... TITLE AGAIN .. KG looked good .. no more knee issues ..

Beantown is definitely my favorite city to travel to for work. Such a great atmosphere...plus there are bars everywhere! Although going out wont' be as much fun now that my sister went back to Providence. Gotta get back to the Black Rose & Red Hat

Only 40 - 50 carbs in one day???  Good god.  That would take a lot more self-control than I currently possess.  Kudos to you.

I'm not as strict as Dr. Bernstein would suggest but I do eat a lot of eggs, tuna, chicken and vegetables, vegetables and more vegetables.  I use to eat a very lean, high carb diet ( alot of fruit, etc...) but I just hated the unpredictable highs.  Reducing carbs has reduced  the high's so that's why I do it.  It's not cause I want to.
