Omni Pod - Has anyone used it and if so how did work out?

thats amazing.  i was told my daughter was to young to even consider a pump, she'll be 5 in sep.  I feel like i have no control over her bg no matter how much insulin i give her.

My oldest son is 4 and has been on the omnipod almost 6 months now and my 2 1/2 year old will be on it in about 2 months.  I had to ask and ask but it is possible  but you might have to beg....

My daughter's endocrinologist just told us last week that they have a seventeen month old on the Omnipod. Also, there was an eleven month old baby in our pump info class when we started out. within the first six months after dx when my daughter was three. we asked one of the doctors in the practice where we go, how old would a child need to be to be considered for a pump, and he said 12!!!! we no longer see that particular doctor. There is no age that is too young. My daughter is doing great on her pump, and her blood sugars are so much more stable now.

I dont think i have a very good Dr.  at what point r kids ready for a pump?  do kids have to go to a peds endo?

I think a ped endo is a good idea for kids.  Our seems to be very in tune with the particular needs and challenges of kids.  His policy is six months after dx start looking at a pump, and the insurance companies want to see their BS is in good control before starting the orientation and training.

Hi Tom

If you do a search and enter OmniPod you will find a ton of information. I have just finished the research and talked to my son's Endo (He is 14) but believe me I researched EVERYTHING about all pumps.

I ended up after all this reseach between the Omnipod and the Ping.

There were some things about the Onmipod my son didn't like and some things he did like. Same fo the ping.

Please do not rely on a rep - ask here - the rep will try to get you to lean their way. The choice is what is good for your son 1st and you next.

It is about your lifestyle etc.

I think when you finally make the decision you will realize as I have that any pump you chose will not be a bad choice.  My endo had some minor thoughts on the Omni pod and also the Ping. Nothing major but some things she wanted us to think about.

I know many on this site have both units and they are happy with them (again back to individual choice ) .

Let me know if I can help with anything.

My 10-year-old daughter just started on the OmniPod on Monday after a TON of research and saline trial time with both the OmniPod and the Ping. We are already EXTREMELY happy!! Our endo office actually steers people away from the OmniPod -- there are only 5 kids on it out of a couple hundred that I'm sure are pumping. I think they are nervous about it because it is still so "new." They just don't understand it well enough, but as Maya said, "then they need to learn." Anyway, we pushed the envelope because Maya really liked that it was tubeless and that the insertion is so easy. I am already noticing better numbers, which is so cool!  She is a really active kid -- we covered it with some pre-wrap for basketball practice last night -- simply because she felt more secure that way. It is sturdy though. I tried one on Monday as well -- with saline. The poke is almost not noticeable -- the click is pretty loud though. And it didn't really bother me at all.

Feel free to let me know if you have questions about our experience!

I was thinking of puting my 5 yo on the omnipod--He is wearing the demo pod on his belly for now b/c that is where he gets his insulin shots--

I was curious about backup systems--we are currently on NPH and Novolog--could we use that as a backup or do we not have to have a backup b/c the omnipod is disposable??

Also, what are the best sites to put the pod for little kids??

I would appreciate any input,

Thanks, Pete and Jules mom

Tom,

My son who is 13 and I started on the Omni Pod this past June.  We Love It!!!  My son was on a swim team when he started the pod, and we had to start using an extra spray adhesive, which keep it from coming off.  i have never had a problem with it coming off.  i have been diabetic for 23 years and my son for 10 years.  We have never wanted to use a pump because of wire, so when the pod came out we tried it.  It has changed our lives!!!  I would highly reccomend it.  You can request a sample from www.myomnipod.com and they will send you a pod so you can see it, touch it , even wear it with out insulin to see what it feels like.  I think you should give it a try.

My 10-year-old (not quite as young as yours) has used her tummy, thighs, and back of arms. All of them work great. We are super happy with it!

Hi everyone.

I only recently decided to try my 3 yr old on the pump, thanks to all the support here on Juvenation. Even though he is younger than the rest on the OmniPod, I was inspired by the experiences you all shared and I ordered a trial kit. :) We see his endo Monday and I plan to start the process! I won't feel bad if the Pod turns out to be too big for him, it's worth a shot. :)

Trish,

My daughter started using the Omnipod right after her 3rd birthday. It changed our lives. She is now 5, and we love it! I recommend it wholeheartedly. Molly is pretty small, and we have no issues with the pod being too big. We usually put it on her upper buttocks or lower abdomen. It is not a problem at all, and she has never been bothered by it. I hope this helps.

Hi Mollys Mom.

Thanks for the encouragement. :)
