There is an association it seems. Not exactly left handedness but being less strongly right handed and ambidextrous seem to
have an association with type 1 and some other autoimmune diseases. Lefties are more likely to be injured in accidents, have IQ's that are either really high or really low, tend to be good looking and prone to allergies.
4 of the 5 original designers of the Macintosh computer were left-handed
1 in 4 Apollo astronauts were left-handed - 250% more than the normal level.

Check.
Check.
And my allergies effing suck...so check.
And I use a Mac.
I'll take a little diabetes as long as being a lefty gives me all the bolded qualities too.
But seriously, seems like there are a lot of type 1 lefty's. Kinda want to do a survey next time I go to diabetes camp.
I have four children and my youngest son who is six now was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 15 months. He's the only one that writes left handed but does everything else with his right. WOW.
Chasey is right handed and has a load of allergies along with her diabetes. And I must say she is pretty darn cute to boot.
There may or may not be a link...however I believe that you if you want to think something there will be other people that think the same thing and if you look hard enough you can find supporting evidence either way.

eff it, C, let's go bowling
They also say if you are left handed you were a twin but I think thats more old wives tale type stuff. I have never looked it up but have heard it many times from diffrent sources even the news before long ago.
My daughter is right handed.
So if I start using my right hand for everything, that must mean I will no longer be diabetic!!! ;-)

I was forced to write with my right hand even tho I was writing good with my left when I was in school during the 1970's. I could have been lefthanded all these years. And it does have something to do with type 1 diabetes.

I also have a 16 year old daughter, not diabetic, who is lefthanded.....

Somewhere I read in one of those articles that lefties forced to use the right hand often have dyslexia.

Can I split the money with you if we start a new late-night infomercial? "Cure your type 1 diabetes with our new 'alternative hand dominance therapy' booklet! Call our number in the next ten minutes, and we'll also throw in free ketone strips for when you go into DKA! Through our ground-breaking program, you can forget about those pesky insulin needles and pumps. We'll show you how to do it, but you have to call now..."
I'm left handed and T1. I also have allergies. Weird. I don't see how there can be any connection though. Just seems like a coincidence to me...
Hello Terry
Now that's an interesting thought - I have almost always been able to easily convert from one hand to the other - when I being taught a new technical nursing skill it would rive the 'mentors' crazy- I'd perform the task in mirror image to the demo! I thought it was because over the years, being active I've had one hand / leg out of use. Maybe not. And although I was taught to write with my Right hand [back in the 50's] I recently realized I can manage just fine with the left. Interesting. If you think about all the conditions that apparently share the same genetic 'defect' as diabetes - perhaps you're on to something.
me too !!
T1 Leftie with some allergies here (also very intelligent AND good looking, LOL). I find this interesting. My dad was a leftie, not diabetic. I use utensils with my left and do other things with my right. When learning how to golf, I couldn't decide which way felt more comfortable, so I used my dads left handed clubs and my sisters right handed clubs based on who was standing closest to me when we came to my ball.
For a few years, I have noticed that a lot of people in my community are left handed. It seems like there are more than there should be anyway. I always say it must be something in the water! I have never met anyone else who is both left handed and T1 though.
Haven't an inordinate amout of our presidents been lefties? Don't know if that is a good thing or not..............
I chose my right hand for writing when I was in 1st grad. Had a learning disability. and I loved using my left foot for EVERYTHING, Got kicked out of playing a few sports because I couldn't coordinate. LOL!
I have sever allergies to foods and type 1.
Ah forgot, I'm kinda stupid smart and very cute =)
Me, my mom and my sister are all T1 and we are right-handed. My brother is a leftie, but not diabetic at all. None of us have allergies. Me and my mom are geniuses, my sister's okay, but my brother is dumb as a post.
Hello to the list =)
Another IDDM who writes with their left hand.
I am definitely more dominate with my left hand and my left eye.
i bowl and golf using my right hand =)
Cheers from J =)
