If its vegan chinese food...does that count as being healthy?

haha there's this vegeratian chinese buddist resturant downtown that me and my veggie/vegan friends go to once in a while. its really tasty, cheap, buffet-style and no perversatives, no msg, no meat or animal by products.

i have it in front of me now for lunch. tofo "mock chicken" balls, potato patty, spring roll, some noodles, broccoli, tomatoes, some fruit, peas and onions.

do you think all that makes it healthier??

I mistakenly tried tofu once thinking it was chicken slices.  I was like "chicken is a little spongy".  My friend:  "that's because it is tofu".  Healthier?  Dependant upon its preparation.  Buffet setups enjoy oil and deep frying.  So healthier than the next place down the street, maybe, healthier than what you normally eat, not likely.

i didn't choose a lot of things that were deep fried..only the potato pattie was put in the deep fryer(we've asked). :)

i dont like tofu, but man are these some good mock chicken balls!

I can't get down with the tofu.  If it tastes like I'm eating a kitchen sponge I think I will have to pass.  Deep fried potato pattie?  Isn't that a hashbrown?

kinda. only its like they baked the potatoes, mashed them, added green onion and something else(i cant tell what it is but its a veggie) and then put it into a round ball, added some spice and deep fried it...though it kinda looks like it was done up in a frying pan.

either way they call it a "potato pattie" there haha.

i dont like tofu..thats the only time i'll eat it!

I'm vegan and am not a tofu fan. It tastes funny.

Tofu is funny in that it tastes like whatever you cook it with.  I wouldn't recommend simply boiling it, it needs spices and other textures/flavors for the full effect.  Compare boiled tofu to something like italian sausage Tofurkey, a world of difference.

Sorry Happy Vegan, but I usually find vegan food ... not so great. But, I love tofu, esp in Chinese food. You just have to make sure it's seasoned. I find the meat in most Chinese restaurants to be chewy at best and suspicious at worst. (:

As for healthy ... I agree you gotta avoid the fried stuff. But, I love fried scallion pancakes. Yum!

Tofu is alright if it's made with the right seasonings and spices. Tempe is something that I do love. It's used mostly in Indonesia, and since my family is Indonesian, I love it. It's similar to tofu in that it's a product of soybeans, but it doesn't have the spongy consistency. It's very tasty if you pan fry it with some soy sauce and other spices (my mom makes great tempe, but I'm not sure exactly what stuff she uses in it) and then eat it over rice. I'll have to ask my mom what she uses in it.

It is very hard to find. There's only one Asian food store within a couple of hours in all directions of my town that sells it. We even went to an H-mart (not sure if you know what that is), and the workers didn't even know what it was. So, if you want to try it, you'd have to be willing to look all around.

Yes. It also reminds me too much of meat. It is awesome on burns though.

I have had a lot of bed experiences with tempeh. It always has a bitter aftertaste, no matter how it is cooked or seasoned.

I am big fan of tofu, though, and I also like seitan.

Sarah, I bet you've had lots of vegan food that you've liked, it just isn't vegan food trying to be meat. The best parts of most vegan dishes are the vegetables!

I agree. I don't like meat, I don't like  the way it tastes. Why on earth am I going to buy a product that tastes like meat? I understand though that there are some people who enjoy the "taste" of meat but still  go veg. When I think "vegan food" I think apples, oats, tofu isn't one that comes to mind. It's like vegan junk food :)

I am a vegetarian and i love tofu. i think you guys would like it better if you tried this: marinate it in teriyaki sauce and then cook it on a grill as if it is a hamburger. it tastes great! (oh and you should get the extra firm kind, its less spongy!)

I don't like tempe because it tastes like meat, I just like it because it tastes good. Maybe it's my mom's marinade that makes it taste so good. I'm not a vegetarian, but I think I easily could be. I don't like meat much. I pretty much don't like any beef dishes, and I hate pork. The only think I like is chicken (if it's cooked the right way) and some fish.

i have chinese food every night. chicken broccoli and garlic sauce. i feel like a champ when im done eating that. i know its not vegan style. but i will stand by my word that it fixes my off days. actually im at the point where im afraid to not have it for dinner. its in my routine now. i take the proper insulin to eat it. and im usually on the rebound.

Haha, I meant the other Sarah. There are too many of you!
