Hot yoga and pregnancy

Hi everyone! I just recently found out that I'm pregnant! I have an appt with my gyno in 2 weeks and plan on asking the same question, but also wanted other opinions: is hot yoga safe when pregnant? I've done hot yoga inconsistently over the past year, and just recently began going 2-3x a week over the past month pr so. I've been a t1d for 16  yrs and under control, I'm just nervous about anything that could negativity affect the baby. The internet seems to say yoga is beneficial during pregnancy, however is limited and conflicting about hot yoga.

Thanks for your thoughts!!!

Barb

Hey Barb,

I don't have any personal experience with Hot Yoga but if you want my opinion I wouldn't do Hot Yoga, and you don't really do it consistently anyway. I would just stick to regular yoga because I have heard great benefits of doing it during pregnancy. Especially, for relaxation. I would say use your better judgement.

I did yoga in pregnancy (in a moms-to-be exercise class) and loved it.  It really helped reduce pregnancy swelling in the later months and kept my blood sugars better.

Check with your doctor on hot yoga's effect on pregnancy.  One thing to watch closely is that in the first trimester some women have unexpected lows.  Since heat lowers blood sugar, you may be more prone to lows, which aren't good for your baby.

Hi Barb. I was into hot yoga before getting pregnant - used to try and do it 2-3 times a week. I found a lot of the positions helped lower my blood sugar. However, after I found out I was pregnant, 3 different obgyn’s ( I wanted second opinions) told me not to practice while pregnant. It’s mostly about your keeping your body temperature regulated and not over heating yourself. I read online too about women who continued to practice while pregnant, but I decided to stop. Since I wasn’t doing it 4-5 times a week I didn’t feel confident continuing through pregnancy, but I think it’s a personal decision. I did do prenatal yoga, which ended up being a good enough workout for me since I was always so exhausted! Hope this helps!
