I have a 1 week old and I’m a type 1 diabetic my milk has not come in all the way and I need to supplement with some formula any advise on a kind with no milk? Help
Can you do soy? Is your baby lactose intolerant?
No not lactose intolerant just was worried about introducing a cowsmilk with all I’m reading about the link between diabetes and dairy
You should really talk to your pediatrician. There are a ton of options. We did soy formula, at the recommendation of our pediatrician.
Are the soy formulas still cow milk based? I never looked into those, but in some ways wish I had. My son just turned one and I had to supplement from the beginning. At the time, I hadn’t seen anything on the cow milk debate. After talking to my Dr and reading studies that haven’t found a link, I feel somewhat better about it. But, if I had avoided cows milk, I wouldn’t even have to wonder if there is a connection. Sorry I’m not much help, but I do understand your concern.
The study below is recent and interesting because it looks at early infant diets and connections with T1D.
Look into using some natural supplements to kick start your production…I used fenugreek, which is readily available at Whole Foods or any local health store. Also take some mother’s tea…do anything that is relaxing to helps kick stress (which can hinder milk production). I get that relaxing might seem impossible and stress may seem like it’s there all the time, but you got this! You can also pump to get it going. Babies are REALLY just getting like a tablespoon or two in that first week anyway…not like ozs. If you have a baby boy, please do not use SOY based unless absolutely neccessary. I had a c-section with my 3rd baby and having a c-section (instead of v-birth) doesn’t allow your body the natural hormones that tell your body that it’s time to start with the milk production, so it was a little harder to get started than with my first two. Just keep at it and DO FIND a lactation consultant! It’s worth it! ALL THE BEST and CONGRATULATIONS on your new little one!!
