Headaches

My blood sugars haven't had the easiest ride these last few weeks. But after recieving a replacement pump after the first one broke unexpectedly, they have definately leveled out quite a bit.

Yesterday I did not go over 200; today the highest was about 220, lowest 82. Except I still keep getting these headaches.

I understand that headaches are a sign of a high blood sugar; because of this, it makes sense why I had them in those last, few rough weeks. But it's literally every day that I take Advil because of such an intense headache - at times when my blood sugars have been and are currently fine. Example? Right now, writing this post. My blood sugar is 82, but I'm tempted to call my parents for Advil again, just like last night when I was 105.

I do have Ketones, but I've never heard of a headache being associated with them.

I'm curious if anyone has any answers for me, or theories, thoughts, anything on why I continue to have headaches? Previous to these last few weeks, I rarely ever got a headache - let alone ones these bad.

Thanks :)

I get headaches really often. I have a moderate one right now, actually. I get them from a number of things- highs, not catching a low soon enough, stress, heat, caffeine, when it's...that time of the month, etc. I have noticed that when I get one from highs or not catching a low soon enough, it will stay around for days, sometimes over a week. So, even though your numbers are back in range, the headache could stay for a while.

I really hate taking pain meds, so I usually try to let it go away on it's own, but I usually end up taking something for it. I hate having to take stuff multiple times, though. I really bad stress headaches, which are the worst.

Instead of taking Advil, you could try using a hot pack. Sometimes these help mine a lot, sometimes they make it worse, but it's worth it to try. Just soak a wash cloth and pop it in the microwave for a couple of minutes, wave it around a few times so that it's not burning hot (you still want it to be hot, though- almost too hot for your skin, but not so that it'll burn you), then just leave it on your forehead for a couple of minutes. Try it a three or four times, and if it doesn't help at all or it makes it worse, then stop. Otherwise, you just have to wait it out. )=

If you have ketones sure you can get headaches. That happens to me when I spill them. How long have you had ketones ? Are you drinking plenty of water? You may be dehydrated. The more you drink the better you will feel and they will go away quicker. Keep drinking every half hour. If you have had them for a while you should consider going to the hospital to get  some IV fluids. I would call your doc to make sure everything is ok.

I agree with Sarah. I get headaches so much and more now with the highs and lows. I f I forget to carry something to eat or it's to hot. Don't like the sharp pain and the Advil doesn't seem to help. Sorry I couldn't be of much help but wanted you to know you are not alone.

Anamarys

I get headaches when my sugar is high. Man they hurt too. I'll take some tylonol and insulin but they won't go away for a while.

Gina, probably from 1-2 weeks now. Water is kind of off an on for me at the moment, like yesterday I woke up dying of thirst, but that evening I didn't want anything to drink. And especially with school back in session I'm not drinking water throughout the day, specifically because I can't afford missing class to step out to get a drink or run to the restroom.

And Hospital?? Pass :)

They won't let you carry around a big bottle of water? Seems like they should if you ask b/c of the D? Hope you feel better soon -- headaches are the worst!

We aren't allowed food or water in the classrooms.

Same here Alyssa. We can't have anything in the classrooms with us except our stuff. I think it's weird too because one of my teachers husband is Diabetic.

Hey girlie!

Well after a couple weeks of having higher numbers and then i started getting normal numbers i get head achs idk y i do tho... and also i got head achs like u do and i went to the eye doctor and found out i have a number of things wrong with my eyes causing me to get head achs.... and as u know diabetes plays a big part with your eyes.

Normally when I get a headache, it could be one of the signs that I am actually going low or recovering from a low. The last time I woke from a night of lower BS than I would want, about 60 I had a terrible headache for most of the day. Eventually I will kick the headache, but normally it is when low, not high.

I have to echo what Brian mentioned about recovering from a nasty low is about the only time I will get them. I believe studies have shown that women in general regardless of affliction suffer more headaches than men.

What I find almost insane is that schools don't make exceptions for diabtics to have emergency sugar available during classroom hours.  What they don't seem to get is sugar to us is as important as a rescue inhaler is to an asthmatic.  To be honest I don't know if they are allowed to carry those as some schools have zero drug policy. Remember the story about a girls expulsion for having advil in school?  Common sense people,  where did it go?

Well common sense wnt out the window long ago. I always had my sugar with me in school and could care less about what people would say.

I think the reason that women get more headaches than men, is because men tend to be the cause of headaches. Granted, I tend to be the cause of people getting their eyes stuck up in their head due to constant eye rolling. I am sure this translates into more headaches. Oh well.

And don't forget the convenient "not tonight dear, I have a headache..."  to keep overly amourus husbands and boyfriends at bay *heh*.

<snicker>

I never ran into that problem.

I've always been allowed to carry around a water bottle in all of my classes. Some of my teachers don't allow food, but I just take my glucose tabs in anyway. There was one exception last year, in that my health teacher wouldn't allow any type of food or drink in his class, not even water. I didn't bother telling him about my diabetes or anything, because he's a jerk of a teacher and I know that he wouldn't care what my "excuse" was, he wouldn't allow it. It seems that since he's a health teacher, he should understand, but of course he wouldn't.

I think it's really wrong not to be able to have glucose tabs or water in the classroom.  If you don't already have a 504 plan or an equivalent of one, you should get one and be sure state that you should always be allowed to have at least fast-acting and water in class.

Btw Alyssa, I hate leaving class to get water, too, but it would definitely help.  Although today I was really high at school as well and I didn't drink anything and was really thirsty.  I know what you're talking about >_<

Water I might question really eeding. However, glucose tabs are essential as is having some type of sugar with us. It is not only for our own well being, but also for those around us. You need to insist upon your rights as one with a disease such as this. More so if a teacher does not get it, have them talk to your parents, have them talk to your doctor about the medical need for this stuff. If they deny it, you need to keep fighting until you get your rights or you black out in class and scare the teacher to death when they don't know what they need to do to help you.

<---- Wall flower (or so I hear)
............. wall flowers don't fight. School will be school.

If it was important to you, you could argue the water thing I'm sure. If you're high, you can get dehydrated. It would detract from your legal right to learn in a classroom, etc, etc.
