This will be our first halloween since dx last nov my daughter is 4 just want to hear some things other families do? I am thinking of doing a small amount of trick or treating like a small block and having a party at home after with carb free snacks and games.
This is our 1st halloween, too! Great idea. We are letting our 5 year old trick or treat and then the day after we will be going to a candy exchange @ a local hospital. It is for diabetic children, exchange their candy for a small gift. The kids get to play games and have a good time together! Good luck!
This will be our second Halloween since Courtney was diagnosed, she is now 4. Last year we let her go wherever she wanted and let her know she could not eat anything without letting one of us know. She got tons of candy and she was allowed to eat it in small servings over the next few days. My husband and I would sneak some of the candy out while she was sleeping and take it to work for co-workers to eat instead. Courtney never realized that the bag was lower than before and she understood that she could not sit and eat it all in one sitting, and she had to let us know and check her blood sugar first. I was actually more worried about the Halloween Party at daycare than her trick or treating.
Oh, we also had some neighbors give her "special" treats like Playdoh and crayons instead. I thought that was awesome that they were thinking of her and her diabetes. My advice is to make it as normal as possible. At this age you can make the candy go away real easy.
Last year was my daughters first halloween with diabetes and we tried to think of something fun. We let her go trick or treating like normal but our last stop was grandmas house where there was a gift waiting for her and she got to choose if she wanted her bag of candy or the gift. She chose the gift and the candy went to grandma. She got to be a normal kid and trick or treat but the candy was out of her mind as soon as she seen wrapping paper!

There were a bunch of excellent suggestions on this, it was a while ago, but some of the ideas were great. Monique started the link a while ago.
Hope it helps.
This is also my son's first halloween. Our neighborhood always has a party and the kids go out trick or treating together. This year we will provide low carb, sugar free snacks for the party. And my son will still trick or treat, however he came up with the idea to send his candy to the troops overseas.
This is our first halloween as well. My daughter does not have a real sweet tooth; however, halloweens past we had the halloween fairy come and take a good portion of the candy and she would leave something the kids would like. We, the halloween fairy, would leave movies, toys,clothes......., whatever your child likes.
We let them have some candy.

awesome idea I think that is what we will do the party sounds like too much work with our busy schedule and we are going to make the gift something really special!!! probably something Hannah Montana since that is all she talks about Thank you for this suggestion
Kim - the "Halloween fairy" !! I love it! This is a great suggestion and a fun way to do it! We have always only allowed 1-2 pieces at a time anyway, coming out of a secret hiding place and after a few days my son would forget that it was even there and my husband and I could dispose of the remainder. Now that he will be 4, I suspect this will not be as easy. (Though I have yet to give him any of his summer parade candy after we get home for the same reason.)
I have also love the suggestion to send to the troops.
Now for a more fun question- what will your kids' costumes be this year? I am planning that mine 2 (ages 4 and 20 mos) will be "Thing 1" and "Thing 2" from Dr. Suess's "The Cat in the Hat." I suspect that this will be the last year I get to pick my sons costume so I am taking my opportunity. They terrorize our house like the Things in the book - so maybe it is not much of a costume. ;)

[/quote]I think we've just about settled on a "cash for carbs" exchange...the kids can trade in any candy to us and get .01 for each carb traded. Trick-or-Treating like usual, math lesson, and less candy to deal with. Sounds like a winner to me :)
For what's left, does anyone have any idea where to send candy for the troops overseas?
Blessings,
Mo
This is our first Halloween since my 4 year old son Alex's dx and I told him and his twin brother and 6 yr old sis that after trick or treating they can pick out some of their favorites for special snacks and "sell" the rest to Mom for a trip to Splash Village, an indoor water park. Sounds like a treat for the whole family! They are all excited about it. So, I've got Halloween night covered, but it really bums me out that I'm planning on avoiding all the other Halloween outings we usually do.
