Going to the Movies

It has been almost a month since we got our diagnosis. We promised our daughter a treat night every week for doing so good during the week. She wants to go eat somewhere tonight and then go to the movies. I worry about how to dose her. If we eat dinner at 5 or 6 and then go see a show around 7 and she wants a snack, do I do a regular dose for dinner and then just give her a second injection for the snack. I am still so scared of hitting a low in the middle of the night that giving her an extra shot plus the Lantus makes me nervous. Any tips would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

@AbbisMommy03,

Yes you have to bolus for carbs both times. But you should definitely check with your doctor or CDE…What kind of snack were you thinking at the movies? Maybe try bringing something with you that doesnt need a bolus?

@AbbisMommy03

I agree with Gina. But you do not need to worry about the Lantus as much as overdosing the bolus of her regular insulin for the snack.

I would take a snack with you that she can eat.

Both Gina and Scott gave the textbook and very accurate diabetes advice.

I’d say it depends on the snack. If it’s less than a 2 unit of insulin snack, just add the bolus into what she’s taking for the meal. By the time it’s active in her system she’ll be eating the food at the theater. If the snack is candy or something that will digest quickly it will hit the blood stream quickly too.

If she’s eating a meal, then hours later eating a big carb snack, doing 2 shots will help her feel her best.

If it’s somewhere in the middle, you can also try delaying the meal shot until after she’s eaten, then checking her blood sugar before bedtime to see if she needs a correction to cover the snack. Sometimes eating out can be tricky and can take way more insulin than you’d estimate.
