Glucagon

we haven't had to use it ever. my husband never even had none around (and i didn't even know what it was) until our son was diagnosed last year. we now have one, but have never had to use it. We do have one now, but it has been so long since we were shown how to use it i think i would have to read the instructions first, so it might be faster to call the paramedics. We were told to practise with it when it expires.

Not to scare anyone, but...  twice by parents had to use glucagon on me, probably about 5  years after I was diagnosed (so I would have been around 10?  11?)  My dad found me both times - he would always stop in to check on me while I was sleeping before he left for work, and both times he found me with my eyes open but not responsive.  One time they did call the paramedics, and luckily I woke up right when they got there.  It's a weird memory - waking up and seeing 2 EMTs and my parents standing in my room.  "Hey guys, what's happening....."

wow..i have saw almost all "never had ta use it" 's! i wish i could say that..i have had type i for 13 years well as of this month 13 years! and i never had ta use one until about a year ago..and seince then i have had quite a few used on me. its scary. i used ta have such good control over ma diabetes..but for a few years now theyre really bad! in one month a few months back i had 4 seizures(full out)..paramedics called and all, and i was affraid ta fall asleep every night. so im so glad for all of you that can say never had ta use one, i hope that everyone's diabetes stays in control, and that everyone stays healthy :) good luck everyone..keep doing what ya gotta do..one day there will be a cure, and we wont even know what ta do..lol..i know i wont ive lived almost ma whole life with diabetes, and ive tried ta imagine what id do if they found a cure, ba i never can.

No - hope we never have to. Although I did get it out when ds was low and not willing to eat or drink anything.  The threat of me having to do a shot finally won him over...( I am not good with shots)  and he chose to drink a soda instead.

Yes.  We just did.

Benjamin got very sick this past weekend.  He was vomiting repeatedly & refused to drink or eat anything.  He got very low & our endo advised over the phone to give him a small amount to make sure we could make it to the hospital without an emergency.

We keep 2 around.  I always carry one with us in his diaper bag.  Glad we had it!

Yup. I didn't remember it though.  I was pretty zoned out.

I LOVE that idea, i never thought of it and I wish my hospital where i trained had ones to test out because I have never used it and therefore explaining how to use it to someone else is difficult since its not an experience of mine.  Thanks for that tip!

Our endo office wants us to keep at least one for emergency use and just in case she gets sick so we can give a mini glucagon shot if she cant keep anything down.  I would have never thought of using a mini dose when sick but it makes sense.

I can honestly say that I've never had to use one, but had a few times that I should have used one. I've never even owned a glucagon kit & I've been T1 for almost 14 yrs(anniversay is in April)
