I am curious about experiences with the glucagon emergency kit.
1. Have you ever had to use one and who or how was it injected.
2. Do you replace it without using it because of the expiration date.
3. Have you ever used one with the expiration date long expired.

I save my expired ones for training purposes! I dont use them on my son but I use them to train his school and bus driver! along with any new care givers. Never throw them out some people are hands on and need to see it up front and personal... we use of course rufus or bear he is such a good sport never complains :)
I have never had to use mine, thankfully! I have taught all of my former roommates, boyfriends and close friends how to use it just in case though. I do replace it when it expires, or at least when I notice it expires and the doctor always asks if I need a refill because I used it, looking slightly worried haha.
Huh! Good idea to save the old ones for training purposes. I always just hope whoever needs it will read the instructions quickly, I guess. Luckily, I've never used it, but I always *try* to keep a current one.
I must have missed out on this Rufus the Bear -- is this dating me? I've only heard about it since joining juvenation. At work, we have a monkey with cochlear implants to help the kids learn about using their CI's to hear. There are mini-CI's w/ buttons that you can velcro onto the monkey. Same idea I'm assuming?

1.) I have used it, it was injected by my friends and family into my thigh... Once my momn injected it into my arm, which just made an awfull bruise and hurt like hell.

I have never needed one, thank god, because I don't even have one! Where do you get one?
It is a prescription item. It is used to treat severe hypo/low blood sugars. I've had one given by paramedics. My wife usually calls 9/11 when I have a severe low because I am 6'2'' and weigh 190lbs and she is only 5'2''. She is afraid that she won't be able to "manhandle" me.

I do plan to hold on to expired kits for "training" purposes as suggested by our DE. I actually hosted a "care and feeding of special needs kids" class at my house this morning. Me and four other mom friends got together to go over how to care for our son with T1, as well as one of the other mom's daughters who has a life-threatening dairy allergy (no kidding). I showed everyone how to use the emergency glucagon kit, and we all learned how to use an emergency epi-pen. Pretty cool. Shortly after our son was diagnosed, my husband was bitten by a copperhead in our garage, and one of my friends pointed out that if there was ever a serious family emergency, we had NO ONE to leave our son with who would know how to take care of him. She was the inspiration behind the "care and feeding" class, bless 'er.
And, yes, Rufus The Bear With Diabetes is an essential member of our family. Lordy, the wails of grief when he was temporarily lost. Thank goodness we have a couple of back-up bears. BTW, if it ever comes up, Rufus does survive the washing machine and dryer in pretty good form :)

Great idea Mo! When I was little, my Mom advertised through the local JDRF (then JDF...) and found a 12 year old year girl to babysit me who also had T1 and knew how to care for me while my Mom went out for a couple of hours. Such a good idea!
