DKA question

I was in the hospital for the first time with dka. I’ve been home for 3 days, eating for 5 total. My stomach has been in knots all day. Is this normal? I called the office and they weren’t sure if it was dka related, although I don’t have a fever nor do I have ketones showing on the pee stick. I am not throwing up, but at times the cramping hurts so bad I feel like I might.

It’s really tough to say @Floresmb. Stay hydrated. Keep your sugar as good as possible and if you have no ketones you are not likely in DKA. Call the doctor or your regular doctor if this doesn’t go away.

If you are in pain call your doctor. Cramping can be a sign of dehydration, so as @joe said, keep hydrated and keep an eye on your numbers while you wait for the office to open. Don’t forget that many insurance plans have a 24/7 nurse hotline you can call if you think it best not to wait - I’ve used mine a few times and they helped set my mind at ease. I’m not a doctor but a couple of possibilities that come to mind are certain mineral imbalances or even eating some food that had expired (no offense). Again, those are simply ideas. Please consult a medical professional - your doctor will take details and perhaps run tests to get to the bottom of the issue, give you a diagnosis and start treatment.

Hi @Floresmb. I wanted to check in and see how you’re doing. I hope you’re feeling better - let us know!

Hi all,
Thank you all for your guidance. The doctors have told me that my stomach is hurting so badly most likely for all of the antibiotics and other medications I was given at the hospital. I’m getting more blood work done to see how every is going, and taking a probiotic.

I hope your pain has decreased. Keep us posted on your progress!

Hi Mary, I hope you’re feeling better, I’m T1d and my nephew as well. He was in the hospital recently in DKA. The whole time & after getting back home, his stomach hurt pretty bad as well. It took a few days for his stomach to feel back to normal as he eased back into eating. Idk the specific reason, but everything is out of balance in your body, & your stomach & gut seem to take the brunt of it. Be safe and get well!
