My name is Ellen-Nora and I have a son that was diagnosed with type 1 at age 2 he is now age 22 and just graduated from college. He is in his master’s of teaching and just got hired as a music teacher at one of our local high schools. I am super proud of him. Life has not been easy for him but he has met life head on with all the challenges that being a diabetic has brought him. He just got on a tslim and dexcom sensor. I came to the JDRF site when my son was newly diagnosed but I was a mother of 3 boys and recently separated so life was hectic to say the least. I am remarried now for 10 years and I have an additional 2 stepsons. So together we have 5 sons. Four of them have graduated from top colleges and one is starting in the Fall. My husband has been a teacher in NC for 28 years and I am an exceptional children’s TA in elementary school. I have always been my son’s advocate and have found help for him with college through Vocational Rehab. This resource has been truly a blessing for my son. If you would like to know more about it please message me I am always happy to share the application process. College can be very expensive and it is important to have help if you qualify. I am reaching out on here because I am again frustrated with the options for my son to get supplemental help from our government with his durable medical supplies. If you aren’t considered disabled (which I have not been successful proving) with type 1 you can’t get medicaid at age 22. If you want to work, and contribute to society there is no help for this age group that I can find. I would love help from this forum if you can assist me with locating an agency that gives financial assistance for copays. I am anxious to read all the posts I have missed and I hope to contribute to this forum with my years of helping my son with the many ups and downs of this disease. Life is good, let’s lean and learn from each other!
