I am Debra Sircar, age 64. I was diagnosed a type 1 diabetic in 1973, the spring of my high school graduation. Lived in Florida then, and my doctor for the diabetes treated mostly older people judging by the other patients in his waiting room. I didn’t know anyone my age who was diabetic, very lonely. Went off to college that fall; in hindsight I wished I’d postponed college a semester so as to give myself a starting handle on this disease. Many struggles with control back then. I’ve had many highs and lows through the past 46 years with this disease, but positive changes have come ever since I started on the medtronic pump in 2007 (no more late night severe lows), and used my blood sugar meter more often. I now embrace the use of the Freestyle Libre14 sensor. Looking to upgrade pump to medtronic 670G and Guardian CMG.
Two years ago my endocrinologist ( a gem of a doctor!) started me on Trulicity 1.5. This is in addition to my Fiasp insulin regimen. While Trulicity is typically marketed for type 2 diabetics, it can be successful for some type 1 diabetics. I have found great success with it, with lowering my A1c and the wonderful side effect of losing 40 lbs of weight. I am on a moderate exercise routine along with walking my dog and gardening/ yardwork. Still have roller coaster BS when traveling which is frustrating, and eating out becomes a challenge because sugar is put into too many asian dishes! I’d welcome any suggestions from fellow type 1 diabetics, especially from those who have lived with this disease as long as I have. Thanks, Debra
