The random phrases that People say about Diabetes that do not make sense

Allie, I had the same problem

it got to the point where i was so self-concious of changing that I would do everything I could without exposing my pump as slowly as possible and be late to gym everyday so once everyone left i could change my shirt

I have to thank you all for sharing your frustration with ignorant people!  My 4 year old was just diagnosed and we are starting to run into these people and their comments.  It is so great to have you all share your knowledge!  Mucho appreciated!  Now lets go have some carbs and scare the dumb people of the world!

haha, I like your attitude, Amy :D

woo goo amy!

yeah!

hah.

Okay, I can't help myself.  I just have to throw in a "good" story.  I was out with William and his younger brother (4) and we had to run into a Mexican restaurant for an "emergency" lunch (I KNOW you all know what I'm talkin' about!).  Our server was soooo cool.  William, as he tends to do, blurted out "I have diabetes", and this guy totally took it in stride.  "You're taking good care of yourself, right?".  (Yes, this was the restaurant in which William went running through the dining room with exposed needle in hand...gotta love kids).  After we'd mowed down WAAAAAY too many carbs (it was Mexican, after all, and William was low), the server came to check on us and very discretely whispered in my ear "He can't have dessert, right?".  I told him we would pass on dessert.  But, how cool of him to ask, instead of assuming?

On our way out, I had the opportunity to discretely chat with him and let him know, just for future reference, that most folks with diabetes can eat everything everyone else can, they just need to adjust their insulin.  He seemed genuinely appreciative of the information, and I know he'll be an even greater server the next time around.

Wow, I wish everyone in this world was jsut like your waiter!

that is so cool that he didn't assume and asked you descreetly so William wouldn't hear! I'm so happy for you (:

monique-wow thats insanely awesome

That's so cool, lol

My daughter is recently dx.  We also happen to have a friend who wears a pump.  Another mutual friend told me that she belives that this little girl wears a pump because she likes the attention that she gets!  The comment didn't really register at the time, the more I thought about it, the more furious I became.  My daughter, who is 9, would rather not have anyone know....EVER!  I just wish people wouldn't talk about things that they don't understand!!!!!!

balletmom- i strongly agree with you =D

the thing i get the most when i tell my friends is.. "oh, that rly sucks." or "you wont have it forever, right?"   i hate that. its like YES it sucks thanks for rubbing it in and in fact, i WILL have it forever unless they get this cure going.

I went to go buy the book calorie king today for my daughter who is 4 and the clerk asked why i use the book I said it shows the carbs in food and fast food restaurants she said to me well if you are diabetic you shouldn't be eating at McDonalds you should go home and plant some vegetables!!! sorry but I walked out and I will never shop there again I am phoning the store tomorrow to talk to the owner and tell them to teach their employees if they don't know what they are talking about they should say nothing!!!

oh, ask your endo, mine gave me the calorie king book free, maybe you guys can all get a copy that way too?

My daughter was two when she was diagnosed and I think the most common one was: "Wow! Shes 2 and on insulin already? It must be really bad" Or "How did she get it so young?" I had a lady ask me what kind of formula did I give her as an infant. When  told her that I breast fed she asked me "did it have something to do with the things you ate while nursing?" I just told her no, it has nothing to do with that. Whats funny is when she was newly diagnosed I obsessed over what I ate while I breastfed and how could I let this happen. Until I educated myself, I didnt even believe the nurses at childrens hospital who told me it wasnt my fault. People are just uneducated. Believe it or not I had a conversation with a friend of a friend(who jst happened to be a doctor) who told me if I get her sugar under control maybe she can come "off" insulin. I just looked at her like she was CRAZY!

That is SO IGNORANT! I believe you should call and talk to the owner. I personaly would have told her off on the spot. She obviously doesnt know anything about type 1 diabetes, and I would have told her I hope you never have to go through something like this with your child or grand child because you are obviously ignorant and need to keep your mouth shut!

madisonkim-that is unbeleiveably rude, and ignorant.

i wouldve given her a whole education on type one right then and there and a piece of my mind.

ha.

wow thats sad.

some of my favorite comments about my health.....

"oh, thats not that bad."
"how is the diabetes going?"
"are you still taking insulin?"
