Possible Eating Disorder

So I’m a 20 year old male and I have been experiencing a strange situation with my eating. As of about 5 years ago, I began feeling like I was going to throw up while I ate. I understand this is a common issue but what’s weird is that when I’m home or eating with my family or close friends, I never feel like throwing up while I eat. However, when I used to eat lunch at school, or now when I’m studying abroad and eat with my apartment mates here, I literally can’t eat a meal without feeling like throwing up. It’s not that I don’t want to eat, I actually love food, but I just can’t force it down. I was hoping somebody could have an answer for this.

@Adam…Sorry to hear about your problem. I’ve never come across a situation like this before. It sounds like it could be an emotional thing but this is speculation. You need to get in touch w your doctor. Having long term T1 can cause something called Gastroperisis. It’s delayed emptying of your stomach after eating. One of the symptoms is nausea and vomiting. At 20, I don’t think you’ve had T1 long enough to develop this. It can happen after having long term diabetes. I’ve had T1 x 46 yrs and mine was diagnosed when I was in my middle 40’s. I sometimes throw up before or after eating and have bouts of constipation and loss of appetite.
To determine this, I had to be tested. One of the tests determined how long it took for my stomach to empty after a meal. This pretty much confirmed the diagnosis. Since I’m not a Dr and can only tell you about my experience, you need to talk to your Dr, especially if you’re losing weight and having a lot of lows and poor control.
Please don’t feel silly or embarrassed to talk to your Dr. It sounds like you’ve been dealing with this for awhile and by not saying anything, it can get worse before better.
Again, please talk to your Dr.
Good luck.
