I get tired of being treated like I must have Type 2 because I'm an adult

Hi Jodi -

I also got the bloodwork to check my insulin output & my pancreas was still producing a small amount of insulin at the time, but was dying - its been about 8 months now since I had that test (C-reactive protien I think)  - how could you tell when your pancreas was completely dead?

The antibody test was to confirm the LADA dx - it showed that I had antibodies (GADA I think) indicating that my immune system is killing my pancreas.

I know what you mean about the sweet tooth & baking  - I loved sweets & baking too!. I have been experimenting with trying to use soy flour & other stuff for baking, but I haven't had much success - how depressing :(.

It has been a huge adjustment but after 8 months I think I've finally come to terms with it somewhat. Not too much of a choice there!

Take care!

Lynanne

Hi Jodi:  Regarding your son, first I must say I am not a medical professional, so these are both my opinions and some information that is widely disseminated regarding Type 1 diabetes.  There is presently no way to stop the onset of Type 1 diabetes.  However, the Type 1 diabetes TrialNet (www.diabetestrialnet.org) is a good place to start, where your son can be screened for antibodies (which strongly predicts whether or not someone will get Type 1) and potentially join a prevention study.  There are downsides to being screened--some people just don't want to know.  It is something to weigh carefully.  Then, if your son does get Type 1, there are ongoing clinical trials to test treatments that potentially delay or halt the autoimmune beta cell destruction process.  Again, you have to carefully weigh the risk/reward.  If I were newly diagnosed, I would certainly try to select the best clinical trial for myself to halt the immune-mediated process.  I hope this is useful information to you.  Do you have a trusted endo you can ask for assistance?

Best of luck to you, Melitta
