You are so sweet! Brandan has only recently gotten to the point where he realizes he has diabetes. My heart broke a couple of months back when I was ill one day and after I asked him if his sugar was high, he asked me if mine was high. He then asked me if his little brother's was high. I guess I knew the day was coming to explain it to him, but it still surprised me. We have a couple of DVDVs that JDRF and Children With Diabetes sent us when he was first diagnosed, but he was just a baby then. I always kept the DVDs in the stack with the rest of his movies and now he watches them from time to time. He gets so excited. "Look mama, sugar! Look, insulin!" It's one of the many things that makes me proud (because he understands and deals with it like a champ), but hurts me because he has to put on a DVD to see other kids like him. He is very much a part of his daily diabetes management. He gets his own "sugar stuff" (that's what we call the meter, lancet device, test strips) and he has NEVER had a problem with me checking his sugar. Didn't mean to blab so much, you just touched me with your interest in my son. Thank you.
My pump isn't waterproof so i couldn't wear it on rides or in the wave pool, but I doubt that anyone would have noticed if I was wearing one anyway. And I do not think that they can be allowed to ask you to take it off as it is a medical necessity. Luckily for me, with all the physical exertion that comes with swimming my blood sugar stayed in a range of 150-160. I had it off for about 4 and a half of the 6 hours I was there. I put it on when we were having downtime from the rides so I had it on in intervals and luckily, it didnt shoot up even after a blous.
Have fun and I am sure it will be fine to wear! :)
no personal experience, but one suggestion! call the park before you head out and ask them about it? with the number of people on pumps these days, i'm sure they've come across this situation before.
Calling ahead sounds smart. But if you're still worried about people
asking about it, tuck it out-of-sight. People tuck things into their
bathing-suits for safe keeping all the time, so they won't think much about about a bulge in your trunk pocket.
I'd be a little worried about the tubing and the pump, though. I think somehow I'd arrange it so absolutely no tube sticks out. And I'd put my hand over the pump whenever going down the slides. The educator who just recently started me on the pump said the official stance on things like roller coasters is that you shouldn't take your pump on one, because of potential for dropping, banging, etc. Just be careful with it.
My ping has seen plenty of pools, oceans, and the gulf of Mexico. Make sure the battery cap is on tight (is the yellow o-ring in good condition?). The battery cap is very important to keep water out of that part of your pump. Otherwise, your pump will be fine, I also think the tubing and insertion site are the areas to protect. "Lock down" your insertion site with at least two patches of the IV3000 adhesive tape if you have it. If not, find some water proof medical tape (if it exists). I like to tape down the tubing close the the insertion site (which I would have hidden under my bating suit) coil up the extra tubing and tape it down again. Have a blast, you are smart to think ahead.
Have you considered going to MDI for the day. There is a lot of water rushing on slides, wavepools etc. It would not take much to lose a pump on a slide or something. You might also think about using MDI but getting a locker at the water park.
Thanks for all the suggestions! I considered both MDI (except not seriously, because MDI was AWFUL for me. I mean, my "highs" were in the 80s and I saw lows in the 30s at least twice a day, and I don't have scripts for lantus.) and disconnecting except when i'm taking a break, but I just couldn't bring myself to leave my pump behind.
I very successfully hid both pump and tubing away, and they only came out to play when I wanted to know what time it is (yay pumps!). Mostly good day, too - no lows, and peaks around 200 after hash browns this morning and ice cream this afternoon. I had a blast, and was glad to be able to keep Aggie with me.
if they say something just say that you're diabetic and it's a neccesity that you have it. i doubt anybody will notice or say anything as most will probably realize it's for a medical reason. have funnn!(:
