Chances of future siblings being a Type 1 as well?

I am the middle child, my little sister does not have diabetes, she had an attitude! jk lol, but no diabetes. I got mine from and allergic reaction to my hepatitis b shot, maybe try that! :)It has nothing to do with the gene.

Although my sister has not been diagnosed. My father, his sister, her daughter and my grandmother (fathers mom) are/were diabetic.

The only two people who have it in my ENTIRE family are me and my brother. He was diagnosed 6 years ago at the age of 8 he's now 14. And I was diagnosed almost 5 months ago at 21!  And our little sisters have been tested and they are fine (for now).

I hope this isn't too private, please forgive me if it is. I was just wondering if anyone on this site is T1 and has a HALF sibling with T1? I have tried googling the statistics for this many times using different key phrases and haven't had much luck.

I keep hearing that it is uncommon for two siblings to both have type 1 diabetes, but wow, reading these posts has made me think otherwise.

My sister, 3 years younger than me, was diagnosed with diabetes when she was 6. I was diagnosed seven years later when I was 13. Aside from the two of us, there is no type 1 diabetes in our family. Its a total bummer, but it is nice to always have someone who knows what you are going through.

There was a thread a while back that went into details about testing for the antibody. but I can't seem to find the link to it right now.   When I was diagnosed when I was 19, my mom had my younger siblings tested and they both came back negative for the antibody.  Your endocrinologist should be able to tell you where you can have your new child tested -- I think it's just a blood test.  I think it can tell you if the person has the antibody but it can't necessarily indicate when the person will be diagnosed... someone correct me if that is wrong!

I'm in the same boat.  I'm due in June with #2.  Congrats, by the way!  I was worried about the same thing.

There's a trial called the Teddy study.  1-800-749-7424 dial 1, extension 3340857 (I know it's long).  I haven't had a chance to call them yet, but I got the info from my Endo at Sacred Heart in Florida.

hope it helps!

Unfortinatly for me my diabeties they think was part of a chain  reaction from me developing hasimotos (a thyroid dissorder) but on my dads side of the family my uncle is type one and on my moms one of my great grandpas kids posibly had type 1 or he did we arent sure. But both sides of my family have thyroid issues.  All i pray is that my sister dosnt get diabetes or a thyroid issue shed refuse to take the insulin or pills for eather.

I am the only type 1 in my entire extended family. On my mother's side there are numerous autoimmune disorders mostly hypothyroidism but one aunt who has crones disease. I do/did have 2 grandparents who were both type 2's, both dx well after I was dx as type 1 at age 2. My full brother should be worried as he is overweight, and does not live a good life, and to top it off he teaches biology in school so he should know. That is his problem not mine! Along with the diabetes I have hypothyroidism, skin vitiligo, and celiacs, and am at risk for Addison's so I have enough stuff to worry about. I guess when you get one autoimmune disorder your at greater risk for others, nothing I would worry about at this time with your son.

As previously posted it does seem to run in families and should be looked at as a possibility as they get older and have unexplained problems.

I watched my younger sister grow up with it since she was ten, I never thought I would get it due to the studies I have read suggesting such low rates of siblings sharing T1. I was wrong, diagnosed at 19, seven years after my sister's diagnosis.

A friend of mine was diagnosed at 8, and the mother who raised him was later diagnosed with T1 at 52!!

It's hard to say why anyone gets T1, its the whole genetics vs. environment argument. It has been hypothesized that people who become T1 carry a gene that is triggered by some environmental factor, my guess it that its probably a little of genetics and environment.

There are tests out there that can theoretically test for a certain antibody in the family members blood to show if they are more likely to develop T1.

Are you a diabetic? Does it run in your family? That will tell you more if your other child will become a diabetic. I am a type 1 and the only 1 in my family so my children have almost no chance of becomming one, it really depends on family history and these days lifestyle as well. If there are type 2's in your family your children have a higher risk than if you have type 1's. Hope your son does well!

My brother was dx'd in 1994 at the age of 9.  My mom wanted to enroll me in a study and have me tested for antibodies, but I was 14 and didn't want to know.  I figured, if it happens it'll happen, I don't want to worry unnecessarily.  I was dx'd in 2007 at the age of 26.  Looking back, I'm glad I wasn't tested back when I was 14.  I would have spent the next 12 years worried and waiting to get sick.  And just because a person tests positive for the antibodies doesn't mean they will absolutely get diabetes.  It'spart of why I decided to not have my daughter tested.  I figure we will deal with it if/when it comes.  So far, my brother and I are the only ones on either side of our family to have diabetes.  We don't have any other siblings.
